Brambilla soloes to victory and the Maglia Rosa

mai 14, 2016

(Arezzo, 14 May 2016 – Press Giro d'Italia) After 8 stages, an Italian at last leads the Giro d’Italia. On a Strade Bianche-type dirt-track climb, Gianluca Brambilla of Etixx-Quick Step rode away to the stage win and the Maglia Rosa. More than 1'40" after he finished, eleven GC contenders arrived together at Arezzo. Former race leader Tom Dumoulin was not among them. He could not hold the pace on the crucial sector of the race and finished 38th in the stage, conceding 2'51" to the new Maglia Rosa.

Greipel sprints to victory in a hard fought Stage

mai 14, 2016

(Foligno, 13 May 2016 – Press Giro d'Italia) André Greipel took a second bunch sprint win in Foligno and completed a hat trick of wins for Lotto Soudal after his own stage victory at Benevento in stage five, and the uphill victory of Tim Wellens at Roccaraso (Aremogna) yesterday. What was on paper a sprinters’ stage was in reality a highly demanding one. Early on, yesterday's stage winner Wellens took the lead in the King of the Mountains competition from Damiano Cunego. Then swashbuckling breakaway rider Stefan Küng made off alone and led the race for 30 of the final 35 km.

It’s all about Pim, Tim and Tom!

mai 12, 2016

(Roccaraso (Aremogna), 12 May 2016 – Press Giro d'Italia) Encouraged by his team-mate Pim Ligthart, Belgium’s Tim Wellens smartly anticipated the action of the favourites before the first uphill finish of the 99th Giro d’Italia at Roccaraso to deliver a second straight stage victory for Lotto-Soudal after André Greipel.

Rather than struggling, Tom Dumoulin of Team Giant-Alpecin increased his lead in the overall classification. Alejandro Valverde (6th) is now at 41", Esteban Chaves at 44" and Vincenzo Nibali at 47".
