Colombian Dayer Quintana wins Tour de San Luis

Mareczko sprints to win final stage

(25-01-2016 / · Prensa / Press Tour de San Luis) The Italian rider wins Tour de San Luis stage 7 in a photo finish ahead of his fellow countryman Elia Viviani. Colombian Dayer Quintana wins his first Tour de San Luis title with an advantage of 20 seconds over Eduardo Sepúlveda and 35 seconds over his brother Nairo.  “It is really gratifying that Nairo has worked for me” says the winner of the overall classification.  “He is riding for Movistar thanks to his skills, not because he is my brother” underlines Nairo

Jakub Mareczko (Italian National Team) won Tour de San Luis final stage in a photo finish ahead of his fellow countryman Elia Viviani. Australian Jason Lowndes (Drapac) finished third with world champion Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) fourth.

The break of the day formed with Emmanuel Guevara (San Luis Team), Robin Carpenter (Holowesko), Elías Tello (Chilean National Team), Juan I. Curuchet (Argentinian National Team) and Mauricio Muller (S.E.P. San Juan) took a maximum lead of 1’30”. Emmanuel Guevara, winner of the intermediate sprints classification, dropped out of the leading group due to a mechanical problem with 30 km to go.

The Italian National Team, Lampre and Tinkoff began to work together and the escapees were caught with eight kilometres to go. The peloton decided to control the race to avoid new breakaways. The riders in blue helped Viviani to take a good position before the final sprint. When the outstanding pistard Viviani seemed to be Tour de San Luis final stage winner, Jakub Mareczko appeared to achieve one of his greatest victories in his life.

The 21-year-old rider, who won seven stage victories and the general classification at the 2015 Tour of Taihu Lake (China), was surprised after his narrow win in San Luis. He had to work for Viviani, but he lost the wheels of his teammates and he found Peter Sagan’s wheel and “decided to sprint”, explained the young Italian about the last km of a stage which became a homage to Colombian Dayer Quintana.

Nairo Quintana’s younger brother won the overall classification at the 2016 Tour de San Luis with an advantage of 20 seconds over Argentinian Eduardo Sepúlveda (the Fortuneo Vital Concept rider won the King of the Mountains title), 35 seconds over Nairo and 38 seconds over Miguel Ángel López (the Astana climber won the under 23 general classification).

Dayer was delighted with his amazing performance in Latin America’s greatest cycling race. “It is really gratifying that Nairo, a rider who has won the Giro d’Italia and finished second in the Tour de France twice, has worked for me at the Tour de San Luis,” said the 23-year-old Colombian regarding to Movistar’s huge strength, the squad which won the team's general classification. Nairo was proud of Dayer: “He is riding for Movistar thanks to his skills, not because he is my brother,” he underlined.
