Costa Histo-Rica

mai 20, 2016

(Cividale del Friuli, 20 May 2016 – Press Giro d'Italia) Last-minute Giro starter Mikel Nieve, who stepped in for Sergio Luis Henao, made up for Team Sky’s disappointment after the loss of their captain Mikel Landa to illness by winning stage 13, five years after his first stage win at the Giro d’Italia. In the Maglia Rosa, Bob Jungels rode with intelligence and courage but, when he was dropped on the last climb, an opportunity opened for Andrey Amador to make Costa Rica the 24th different nation to lead the overall classification of the Corsa Rosa.

Diego Ulissi doubles up at Asolo

mai 18, 2016

(Asolo, 18 May 2016 – Press Giro d'Italia) Attacks by the GC contenders on the only climb of stage 11 paved the way for a brilliant move by the race leader Bob Jungels. Wearing the Maglia Rosa, the Luxembourger chased down second-placed Andrey Amador, whose acceleration posed a threat to the top of the general classification. Diego Ulissi then bridged the gap to the attacking duo, and his fast finish brought him his second stage win of this 99th Giro d’Italia.

The overnight Maglia Rosa Gianluca Brambilla heroically sacrificed his own race lead to help his Etixx – Quick-Step team-mate Bob Jungels, himself just 23, become only the second Luxembourger in history to wear the hallowed jersey, sixty years after Charly Gaul.

Greipel sprints to victory in a hard fought Stage

mai 14, 2016

(Foligno, 13 May 2016 – Press Giro d'Italia) André Greipel took a second bunch sprint win in Foligno and completed a hat trick of wins for Lotto Soudal after his own stage victory at Benevento in stage five, and the uphill victory of Tim Wellens at Roccaraso (Aremogna) yesterday. What was on paper a sprinters’ stage was in reality a highly demanding one. Early on, yesterday's stage winner Wellens took the lead in the King of the Mountains competition from Damiano Cunego. Then swashbuckling breakaway rider Stefan Küng made off alone and led the race for 30 of the final 35 km.
