L’ancien directeur général du Comité international olympique (CIO), François Carrard, est décédé à Lausanne à l’âge de 83 ans. Sa disparition a été annoncée sur le site de l’Association internationale de la presse sportive (AIPS).
Avocat de formation, François Carrard avait longtemps travaillé au CIO. Il y était entré en 1979 en tant que conseiller juridique avant d’en être le directeur général de 1989 à 2003. Il avait alors oeuvré en compagnie de deux présidents du CIO, soit Juan Antonio Samaranch puis Jacques Rogge.
En 2015, il avait pris la tête d’un groupe de travail chargé de réformer la Fédération internationale de football (FIFA) au plus fort de la tempête qui avait contribué à la chute du président Sepp Blatter.
AIPS Ethics Commission mourns the loss of valued member François Carrard
It is with great sadness that the AIPS Ethics Commission has learned of the passing of its member François Carrard. The news reached us at a point at which we were looking forward to the challenges of the new year.
Carrard was perhaps the most important and valued member of the Ethics Commission and it was thanks to his decades’ worth of experience that we avoided overshooting the mark on occasion. Despite his numerous responsibilities as an attorney, he always found time for us.
Carrard showed us the way in the most difficult circumstances, shining a light not only on the legal situation, but also the human side of each case. That is what made him such an invaluable person to have on our side.
Most recently, François Carrard was busy drafting new statutes for the AIPS and also for the Ethics Commission.
We will sorely miss François. It will be difficult to fill his role in our commission – and especially hard to find someone of a similar calibre.

Le Comité international olympique (CIO) a rendu hommage à son ancien directeur général François Carrard, décédé dimanche à l’âge de 83 ans.
François Carrard était un homme brillant, doté d’immenses capacités d’analyse et d’un très large champ de connaissances et d’expertise. Le président Juan Antonio Samaranch et le mouvement olympique tout entier ont toujours pu compter sur ses précieux conseils. Ce n’était pas seulement un homme de loi et de sport, c’était aussi un homme de grande culture
